Can I use 56 K PCI Internal modem with my RedHat 9.0?
Hi,
I am a newbie to Linux, Can I use, my US robotics 56 Kn Internal PCI modem with my RedHat 9.0? I tried installing it but it doesn't get detected? Do I have to get a driver for that? plz help out I have a V.90 modem, Thanks.
at first try to google for your modem name, adding the word linux at the end, and see if you get answers. chances are, if you need drivers for it with windows, it won't work on your linux at least without drivers (of course). it just means it's a software modem, "winmodem" as some say.
if you don't need any own drivers for it in windows (ie you plug it in, windows scrolls some installations and it works - no cd or anything is required), then it should work on linux as it then should be a "hardware" modem.
/usr/doc/Linux-HOWTOs or something like that ^^
For sure it's a winmodem as b0uncer said. I have one of those thingies from hell too and you don't want to try to get it to work under linux, but us robotics isn't that cheap warehouse stuff so you have changes with google.
as I suspected.. I had winmodem "in the beginning" too, but then I switched it to a non-winmodem..ok, it was a small jump backwards (from pci to isa...good my firewalling old machine has isa) but works and I didn't have to pay a cent.
and as rntm said, it's somekind of a hell to fight with winmodems...I wish nobody had ever invented such thing. but sadly somebody did :/
It's because of stupid companys who want to put as much into their computers without paying anything, winmodems, onboard sound, no fdds, onboard graphic .. which you cant remove in some cases, mainboards with 1 pci slot, and so on.
If I had money I would use broadband, but now to go online I'll have to boot Win98 ..
