burning using k3b never goes very fast

when burning a cd using k3b on a 52x burner, it starts at around 18x, then at about 10% (90mb) it will go way down to about 6-8x. i have no idea why, when it is burning at 18x the buffer state is fluxuating very irregularly. i am burning from a fat32 drive. is there any way i can get better performance???

also, the cd's that are burned are very poor quality... they skip a lot, and some tracks wont even play...
