Boot freezes after upgrading nVidia driver

Hi

I've installed the latest nVidia driver, 1.0-8776 (found here http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_d...1.0-8776.html). The installation, which has to be done without any running X-server, works fine except that the installer tells me to install the pkg-config package (which is installed?!).

I then change the xorg.conf file manually as described in the HowTo (http://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/L...ction-02.html).

When I type startx, everything works fine and the glxgears -printfps command indicates that the driver works as it should.

However, when I reboot, the boot process freezes just before it is supposed to give me the graphical login-screen.

Starting in recovery mode and using startx doesn't work either.

Does anyone know of this problem (and perhaps the solution =))?

I think it's really strange that it works fine at first, but not after a reboot. I can't find any logical solution to this. If it works at first, what magic happens inside my computer that keeps it from working after a reboot?

If I have provided too little info, please tell me how I can help you help me.

Thanks for any suggestions!

nvidia installer problems tend to be distro-dependant. Which distro do you use?

(It is useful to enter some idea as to your location and your distro(s) in your profile. You tend to get better replies.)

There are howto's for most major distros here and on the web, which also have common problems. If your distro has a distro-packaged driver for nvidia, you are strongly urged to use that instead of the official nvidia driver.

Of course, this is an upgrade... you could try: completely remove the old nvidia driver installation. Then cold-install the new driver.
