NVidia driver install freezes/hangs

I'm trying to install NVIDIA driver on my laptop AMD 64. I've tried the x86 driver with Fedora Core 2 and Slackware x86. Also, tried x86_64 drivers on the Mandrake x86_64 distro.

Description of Problem:
I ran the sh NVIDIA...run as root
It prompts me to build the kernel modules myself because there are no precompiled modules available for my distro. So, it builds and it gets to 100% then it freezes/hangs. I'm unable to do a Ctrl+C or Ctrl Alt Delete. I have to do a cold reset.
On fedora core 2, it says in the background, license 'Nvidia' taints kernel
But I don't think that is the problem.

Help! Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I had that problem . Where you running the install of the driver from an xterm or from an actual console? I ended up having to drop from init 5 to init 3 and do the install script from good old console. Alot of the bigger distro's have that bootsplash stuff where even though you close out of Xfree86 your still kinda in a graphical enviroment. I dont know if that has anything to do with it. After I went to a regular console I was able to get it to finish creating the kernel modules just fine. I was using SUSE though, Slackware may be different.
