black screen at start of install

I try to install linux and I get an infanite black screen while the kernal is loading.
I can't even get suse live to run.
I don't remember all of the specks of my hardware. I try to install any distro from burned dvds. I have used multipul sources to download isos and diffrent burners burning at the slowest possible speeds.

I have a 2000 XP AMD chip with a gigibite motherbord. I have a 64 meg nvidea video card and 512 megs of memory.

Is this a common problem caused by a bios setting or a hardware conflict?

I don't know what you mean by 'infanite', assuming multipul=multiple, specks=specs, diffrent=different, gigibite=gigabyte, nvidea=nvidia.

The first part of the SuSE installation checks the checksum of the DVD. Did you do this. That will tell you if the media is ok. If there is a memory test, do that also.

Here are some options that might work. ide=nodma apm=off acpi=off vga=normal nosmp noapic
Try noapic first and nodma last. If you don't have dual processers or a dual core processor, then the nosmp may be unnecessary. The ide=nodma will turn off dma transfer which will make the install slower.

If this doesn't work, it may help others to help you if you include information such as the exact model of the motherboard, and which SuSE you are trying to install. Also, check the HCL list on this site to see if your motherboard is listed.
