All the posts I have seen refer to audio issues with Mandrake 9.2 and the nforce2 chipset. I've tried the nvidia drivers... they won't compile. I get a ton of fatal errors. The RPM they have up is for the 2.4 kernal... and I'm using the 2.6 that comes with 10. Any program that uses audio crashes. The Mandrake Control center reports two audio devices, a NFORCE2 APU where module is "Unkown", and a NFORCE2 Audio Codec Interface, where module is "snd-intel8x0". I've tried changing it to nvaudio and it didn't save. I also tried editing the /etc/modules file directly to change the alias for sound to nvaudio and it didn't make a difference either.
I am desperate for any help anyone might give. This site is a godsend and I thank anyone in advance for wasting their time on me.
Okay so for the modprobe.conf I simply add "alias sound nvaudio" or is there a different format for it? I'm not even sure if that is the correct line because I am working from my memory.
just put in the name of the module. The file was well-commented when I looked. Shoot. I said the wrong file anyhow (I was working from memory as well.LOL). What I said stands, but applies to /etc/modprobe.preload
Sorry. Mine's commented. I'll paste:
# /etc/modprobe.preload: kernel modules to load at boot time.
#
# This file should contain the names of kernel modules that are
# to be loaded at boot time, one per line. Comments begin with
# a `#', and everything on the line after them are ignored.
# this file is for module-init-tools (kernel 2.5 and above) ONLY
# for old kernel use /etc/modules
During the beta2 stage of Mandrake 10, I experienced a problem where my ethernet card wouldn't load, even though loading the module immediately activated it as per my config file. This is how I had to handle it. I entered the name of the module on a single line (just like making an .Xsession file for an xinit. wmaker makes windowmaker, for ex.). So, for my tulip clone, I entered, all alone:
tulip
saved the file and rebooted. Lo and behold. Perhaps this will help.
Distribution: Mandrake 10 Official, dual booting with Windows XP

I have more or less the same problem with my on-board nforce2 sound, i.e. I have no sound at all. I tried vectordrake's suggestions of putting sndintel-8x0 in /etc/modprobe.preload but that didn't change anything.
I hope somebody can come up with good suggestions.
I've been fighting with an eMachines T3265 for days trying to get the built in nforce2 sound card to work with MDK10. I've been through just about every possible combination of drivers and modprobe.conf. Finally, I looked through some of the system logs and found that it was suggesting that I use pci=biosirq as a boot parameter.
So, what did I do? I changed this line in /etc/lilo.conf:
