Audi Line In on a SB Live - recording sw not getting input

I have an install of Debian that I tried to do some recording on the line-in from a cassette deck with Audacity. The audacity mixer toolbar is not giving me the small toolbar to choose the input for recording (mic, line, etc.) and the audacity FAQ says this is either a bad compile or something else is using the device so I am not getting the option. I turned off system sounds as suggested in FAQ, doesn't help. I am using the pkg from lenny, also tried installing an older version of Audacity. Nothing.

Installed krec and it isn't showing anything for line-in either, so it isn't an Audacity issue.

I can hear the line-in soundscoming out of the speakers and also the XP install on that machine, Audacity in windows is getting the input. Also booted up a live CD and I can get line input in audacity in a live distro.

Any ideas on where else to try troubleshooting this? Audacity gives a number of sound device choices (oss/devsp, alsa default, etc) and I have tried each with same error that it can't find device. This is a very common SB Live 5.1 and my sound config seems fine in all other ways. Some kind of conflict for the line in but I don't know where else to look.

OK, kind of a bump. I did go through the step I found in googled threads about a DaVinci code of red lights and green lights in kmix but no joy.

Any other advice is much appreciated, I really don't want to have to do these recordings in windows. I feel dirty the few times a year I boot it

thanks
