Do you know the name of the package that you installed using synaptic? Does the S9250 use the fglrx driver?

Oh man, another low end ATI. I'll post a link this time. =( I hate bringing bad news...

http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?pag...0_legacy&num=1

From WIKI
Code:
Linux
Main article: fglrx

Initially, ATI did not produce Radeon drivers for Linux, instead giving hardware specifications and documentation to Direct Rendering Infrastructure (DRI) developers under various non-disclosure agreements.

In mid 2004, however, ATI started to support Linux (XFree86, X.Org), hiring a new Linux driver team to produce fglrx. Their new proprietary Linux drivers, instead of being a port of the Windows Catalyst drivers, were based on the Linux drivers for the FireGL (the FireGL drivers worked with Radeons before, but didn't officially support them), a card geared towards graphics producers, not gamers; though the display drivers part is now based on the same sources as the ones from Windows Catalyst since version 4.x in late 2004. The proprietary Linux drivers neither support R100 (Radeon 7000-7500) nor R200 (Radeon 8500-9200, 9250) chips[4].

The frequency of driver updates increased in late 2004, releasing Linux drivers every two months, half as often as their Windows counterparts. Then since late 2005 this has been increased to monthly releases, inline with the Windows Catalyst releases.

For information on alternative Open Source drivers, see below.
[EDIT] The 9250 is the r250 chipset I believe, which was dropped a long time ago by fglrx, you need to look for opensource drivers. Infact the r300 is now dropped too!!! the oldest supported cards are the r600/700 for radeon....

It's funny too, because nvidia is the only company with propriatery drivers.... and yet they have the most stable of them all for video? AND legacy support? Interesting eh?

Can't help on locating a driver bt can tell you this much.
I had used a very old pc with an ancient ati card with appropriate driver and switched it back to the vesa driver.
Think ebay and nvidia.

You can use your current video card with no problems but if you want 3D acceleration for those desktop effects then you need the fglrx driver.

fglrx does not currently support the 9250 any more, and the open source drivers do have 3d effects.

I seccond the idea of ebay and nvidia. =P

Nor with my card, ATI Radeon 9550 but you can get the driver in the ATI Legacy section. I don't know if that's the case for the OP's card but if it was once supported the last driver should be found there.
Cheers,
jdk

Yes, but from what I've herd the open source drivers have been devoloped further than the fglrx for those series cards.

http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=221242

Code:
I wanted to send out the word before 2.6.29 hits stable for Fedora 9/10 that the current versions of the ATI drivers (version 9.3 for R200-R550 and 9.4 for R600+) do not support kernel 2.6.29. Although a community patch is available, it has been reported to cause system instability on some cards and it can also potentially cause DoS because a log message problem. Because of these problems, RPM Fusion will not be able to update the kmods for 2.6.29 - if you have kmod-fglrx installed and you're having some problems with yum, please exclude kmod-fglrx from the system updates for now and stay with 2.6.27.

Also, because Catalyst 9.3 is incompatible with Xserver 1.6 used in Fedora 11 and AMD has said they will no longer provide updates for the legacy driver, RPM Fusion is retiring xorg-x11-drv-fglrx for Fedora 11. If you have a R200-R500 generation card, please stay with F-10 or F-9 or alternatively update to F-11 but switch to the open (radeon/radeonhd) Xorg drivers.

Finally, I also wanted to mention that RPM Fusion is introducing a new driver series: xorg-x11-drv-catalyst/kmod-catalyst. xorg-x11-drv-catalyst is the package name for the AMD Catalyst Driver version 9.4 up (which no longer has support for R500 generation cards and below). It currently will only work on kernel 2.6.27/2.6.28 due to the problems mentioned above, but hopefully Catalyst 9.5 will bring 2.6.29 support at which point RPM Fusion will start carrying kmod packages for recent kernels as usual.
I know that is technically for fedora, but I'm guessing that applies to every distro... haha So new kernels will have to be using the opensource drivers. If you want to use the fglrx then I's say don't update the kernel.

Do you mean packages like this?
fglrx-modules-2.6.30-1-686
If you do, then our OP (Ubuntu use) may be in luck. If it's there in the debian repos then I imagine it's there in the Ubuntu ones as well. I'll have to try it one of these days. I last updated the ATI driver in April of this year. When I move from 2.6.26 to 2.6.30 that will give me an excuse to try it out.
cheers,
jdk

You might try a search, first on LQ and if there's nothing then using google for Radeon S9250 driver
You may be able to find out what driver you should be using. If it's fglrx then just install the Ubuntu package and load that module.
cheers,
jdk
