ATI Drivers installed and working fine, but horrible performance


I'm not sure what I should show to help diagnose this problem, but fglrxinfo outputs this:

display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.

OpenGL version string: 2.0.5946 (8.27.10)

So the drivers are loaded fine and it's not using mesa or anything, but I get worse performance in glxgears than with the mesa drivers. I onyl get about 40fps with a x800xt. However with fgl_glxgears I get about 550fps, but in everything it seems kinda slow, most 3d screensavers seem to run crappy, flash sites run crappy, prettymuch everything but videos and fgl_glxgears that requires any kind of rendering power runs bad. Here's the output of glxinfo, and then my xorg.conf, let me know what else would be helpful

Do you see anything odd in /var/log/Xorg.0.log ? Maybe run "cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep gl" and "... grep dri"

Smile ati drivers

Well you might have the ati drivers installed but your glxgears
scores show that 3D acceleration is not enabled. I have a
notebook with no 3D acceleration that gets better scores than this.

Looking at one of the things you posted i.e this

Section "Device"

Option "VideoOverlay" "on"
Option "OpenGLOverlay" "off"
Option "UseInternalAGPGART" "no"

Could the line 'Option "OpenGLOverlay" "off" ' reveal the real
problem. You don't say which distribution of Linux you are using,
you should always incude this in any post. However I don't know
all that much about the ATI drivers.

the distribution (slackware) is listed under my name so I normally don't include it, and the part that you mentioned should not matter. You can't have VideoOverlay and OpenGLOverlay enabled on an aticard at the same time. I don't think it should affect 3d performance though.

Have you tried using the "radeon" driver instead of "fglrx"? The man page for it says your card is supported:

The radeon driver supports 2d only so whats the point, at least now I have crappy 3d support. I've gotten this to work before, I did what I've always done, but I just get horrible performance, I know it's possible.

Hmm... Well, maybe the libraries aren't being loaded properly. I'm assuming that the ati installer puts libraries in /usr/lib/fglrx/lib so do you have this line in your /etc/ld.so.conf? Of course you can always see which libraries are being used by running "ldd $(which glxgears)". There could be a mix of generic/old libraries.
