Question ATI 5450 installation problems

Hi I have installed a new video card with the intention of using the hdmi out for sound and video to the tv. The graphics are working ok but no sound - also in the process Ubuntu is having errors when loading and thus not loading the desktop quick launch bar. I know the card can be configured as such.. can anyone help please !!??

/var/log/Xorg.0.log and dmesg may give hints as to the incomplete boot.

As for the audio you have to look for output, it's probably set to analog you will need to set it for hdmi. Click the speaker icon and look in sound settings output.

Which drivers are you using for the card?

The standard ones currently as I have not been able yet to get it stable enough to find and install the other ones.
Basically there are the standard drivers then the fglrx and then the fglrx with updates drivers available ... I changed the option to use the fglrx driver through the gui and then back to the standard hoping this would fix the problem. The result is better but still no icons on the desktop or Launchpad... I attempted to install unity and ... I think it was ccmz or something like that and I got an error regarding this on a reboot that it had troubles loading.. so I have been trying to uninstall this - however lost the page where the commands were written so I am still searching
