Another Sound Problem..

Hey guys,

here the problem, it the first time it happens to me and I've done everything I could, but it just doesn't seem to work.

My sound card is an integrated AC'97. It is installed properly, sound modules are loaded.
I can listen to audio CDs, there's no problem. But when it comes to listening to mp3 or Divx, it just won't come out. Xmms acts like nothing was wrong, and plays the file normally, but there is no output : it seems like the volume is muted ! (which it isn't of course, or at least not in alsamixer, aumix and gmix..)

Any Idea ??!!

Thanks for your help .!

Are you by chance using RH9?

It does not include the output plugins for MP3 or other "alternative formats of questionable legal status". Perhaps there is a dummy plugin of some sort which makes the file appear to play.

The plugins are available as RH RPMs, but not being a RH user, I don't have the link handy. You can Google for it, or search these very forums; I'm sure someone has linked to these RPMs at some time.

If you're not an RH user, I would:

1) check the XMMS plugins for MP3 and DiVX sound (MPG4?) and see if they are enabled (is the "enable plugin" box ticked?) and correctly configured (meaning select each and click the "Configure" button and see if anything looks out of place).

2) install mplayer and see if it plays the files correctly.

Hope this helps.
