Alsa Service Won't Load--No Card Found

I have an Intel AC97 i810 Soundmax audio card running on a Compaq Presario 5300us. I am using Kernel 2.6.3-7.mdk.

Sometimes the sound works and sometimes it doesn't. I think part of the problem is that ALSA is not loading. When I tun alsaconf I get this error:

No compatible PnP or PCI sound device found.

And if I run alsamixer I get this error:

alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory

I can play MP3s, MAVs and MIDI but sometimes Xine or Mplayer will crash loading the audio channel of a movie. Sometimes I have to reboot to get sound back. One day when I have some extra money I will get a soundblaster and dump this POS soundcard, but for now I was wondering if someone could help me figure out what the problem is.

Thanks,
Ted/

what alsa version are you running? have a look at this

2003-12-01 1.0.0rc1 release | ENJOY! | intel8x0 driver fixes, OSS PCM emulation fixes

http://www.alsa-project.org/

looks like the driver had some issues until then. if your running an older version than 1.0.0rc1, then the answer may be to upgreade.
good luck.

Thank you very much for the help.

I am running version 0.9.0. I'll try the upgrade and see if that helps.

Have a good day,
Ted.

I installed the new alsa driver and libraries and I still get an error message:

Loading driver:
Setting the PCM volume to 100% and the Master output volume to 50%
amixer: Mixer attach default error: No such file or directory
Could not initialize the mixer, the card was probably
not detected correctly.

I selected the Intel i810 option in alsaconf.

I have to go to work now. I'll look around and see what I can figure out.

If anyone has seen this problem and knows a way to fix it please let me know.

Later,
Ted.
