Hi,
My sound card using ALi 5451 chipset is unable to work in Redhat 9 and Mandrake 9.1, it is able to detect the sound card, but can't load the driver. i tried installing the driver from ALi and ALSA but it can't work
However, it works perfectly on Slackware 9. Alan Cox told me its a bug in the kernel. so i think the best way is to update it, but i have no idea how to do that? i know the kernel is available from www.kernel.org but no idea how to install it

Hi... Did not see you post yesterday...
You mean, you manage to setup the system in Slackware and make it work? I thought Slackware 9 kernel level is the same as Redhat (though, AFAIK, Redhat addes some fix of their own)?
Maybe you can try 'dmesg' to see the different between Slackware and Redhat about the sound card detection. Maybe will give some clue why there is such different.
finally got the soundcard to work
i read a book on linux and it said
rpm -Uvh /dir/*.rpm to install every rpm in that dir
after that i modprobe snd-ali5451,
cd /usr/src/linux-2.4
make xconfig
put ali 5451 support as yes
make dep; make modules; make install
then it works
no idea if i should recompile my kernel or not
