AC'97 sound problems

I have serious sound defect when using anything but XMMS, Totem, etc...

I've hunted round the Gnome interface and can't seem to change to the ALSA drivers (one assumes that is the problem).

I'm currently using SuSE Linux 9.2 with Gnome 2.6.

I ask since I'm new to the change.

The sound is rough, raggid, and sounds like it's playing at a slower pitch than it should be.

I had a similar problem - sound playing too fast or garbled or not at all.

With kde 3.4, I got it to work by:

Close all sound applications.
Kde control centre -> Sound and Multimedia -> Sound system -> Hardware
As audio device, select: Threaded Open Sound System.
Select: Use custom sampling rate and set it at 48000 Hz.
Also:
Sound system -> General
Select realtime priority and a large sound buffer (e.g. 394 milliseconds on the slider).

If you set Auto-suspend to a low value e.g. 10 seconds that makes it quicker to switch between aRts and non-aRts applicatons.

This solution comes at a price - I can't get Real Player to work at the same time. I think this is because the above solution uses TOSS not ALSA drivers. But I can't get the ALSA driver to work correctly either. Any ideas out there?
