About to buy iPod Nano for 100% Linux system - good move?

All,

I'm writing here to prevent repeating my previous MP3-player-disaster. In desperate need for a new MP3 player, I want to make absolutely 100% sure that it will work hasslefree with my laptop computer that runs Slackware 10.2 only - no Windows, no WINE.

I'm using amaroK as my favorite MP3 player.

Can someone who owns an iPod Nano please confirm that it works, and if there are any "special tweaks", please post their experience here?

As an alternative - does anyone have experience with the Creative MP3 players and Linux?

The reason for my caution is that I made the _huge_ mistake of buying one of Sony's "MP3" players last year, and while it says 100% native MP3 support on the box, it fails to mention that it requires a proprietary Windows-only program to convert my MP3s to Sonys proprietory ATRAC format which both takes forever, wastes a lot of diskspace, and makes it useless with Linux... No need to further elaborate on my feelings towards Sony...

there is a program called gtkpod that is like an itunes for linux. I am not positive that the nano works with it yet because i don't have a nano but given the popularity of the iPods im sure if it isn't well supported yet it will be soon. Im sure if you got a nano you wouldn't have too much of a problem but hopefully someone with one using linux will respond so you can get some first hand experience. Hope that helps you hot. good luck.

I have a Ipod video- all I have to do is plug it into my computer- and amarok (1.4) detects it and allows me to put my songs on it.

vids and pics are a bit harder, I have to use gtkpod for that. However, I still use amarok for the music because it keeps the album art it automaticly feches for me. (so i get to laugh when I see my windows buddys googling for album art )

btw- you could also install rockbox, or Ipodlinux on it. They both support drag and drop file transfurs and the ogg file format.

EDIT: ipodlinux will even let you play videos (yes, on your NANO!)

I have used an iPod nano with Amarok with no problems. The iPod was detected correctly and there were no problems transferring files or playing them using Amarok. I'm not using Slackware but there shouldn't be a problem.
