Nano using 90% system resources

I have Mandrake 9.2 installed. Whenever I use nano to edit my config files my system slows down to a crawl. I check my running processes and find that nano it using 90% of my resources and I have to kill the process.

What's up?

When you use nano and don't exit with Crtl x it will but just close the window it will do that with some distros.
