9000i video card problem

I am fairly new to Linux and I am trying to load Redhat 9 on a HP Netserver LH Pro (donated to me).

Near as I can tell it has a Trident 9000i video card built on the motherboard.
I have tried several things, but I get the same result when I try to startx.

I am trying to configure using redhat-config-xfree86 and it says ddcprobe returns bogus value.

then tries something - same error, and then tries using VESA (generic driver). Then says can't start X server.

When I just type startx I get...

module doesn't exist, can't load driver. Fatal Error No screens.

Based on what I could find via google - Here is what I put in the etc/X11/XF86Config.

Section "Device"
Identifier "Videocard"
Driver "tvga9000"
VendorName "Videocard vendor"
BoardName "Trident"
End Section

Sorry I don't have the exact printout of the errors/messages, but I am having to switch back and forth and type all this in.

Thanks for any help,
james

I have almost exactly the same problem (HP Netserver LH Pro, trident 9000i graphics chip)

I was able to get it working using vector linux 3.2 with some version of XFree86 3.x
I tried installing slackware but x.org just tells me it can't find any device and there are no screens
A bit of googling turned up that XFree86 lost support for 9000i chips when it reached version 4 or something

I'm looking out for an old PCI card ;-)

Cheers
Forrest
