Angry Video Card Problem

I have an old PCI video card from about 1995 with a new motherboard. I started the install and got to the video configuration with Mandrake 9.1. It recognized the video card S3 Trio. I set the memory to 256, which is the minimum, plus some settings for the monitor, 1024x768.... With this configuration, the test screen showed up and I clicked OK. Then, the installation froze! So, I powered down and started back up. Unfortunately, no GUI! And, I can't log in as root. I'm so ticked. What do I do now?

1) Use the CD to boot in rescue mode
2) go to /etc/X11/XF86Config (thats for redhat, by the way.Look for something similar)
3) Edit the file to lower the resolution to 800 x 600 or lower

4) reboot

NOTE: if you cannot find the file type locate XF86 on a console

Hope that helps....
