[AMD] 79c970 [PCnet32 LANCE] problem under gentoo, vmware

Hello, I am trying to get my gentoo working under vmware. When I say modprobe lance it says

So I dmesg | tail

Now I don't know what values I should append. I did say lspci -v, but I can't figure it out. Since I can't copy paste, here is the line with the ethernet card

Other people have had this problem (I googled before posting here) but they didn't say what values one should add.. Must be one of those "is there any command to list the files in a directory?"

I am sure I would have gotten a lot more attention should I have posted something like "Nvidia vs ATI" or "AMD sucks" or something alike

Anyway, I have found an answer to my problem by lsmod-ing a working kernel and finding I was using the wrong driver. I actually needed the one called pcnet32. So, should anyone need this info, here it is, although you probably shouldn't read at all this post, there must be more interesting threads..

I think you'll neeed to modprobe pcnet32 not lance.

I was having almost the exact same problem this morning that you were having, so thank you for posting back the solution to your own problem (it worked for me). Many people don't bother to do that, so thank you.

I'm finding a way to download pcnet32.c, pcnet32.h and compile them into pcnet32.o, after that load pcnet32.o. But it stuck, I cannot findout pcnet32.o and pcnet32.h

In your kernel config ( ) under device drivers, Ethernet 10/100 enable:
[*] EISA, VLB, PCI and on board controllers
<*> AMD PCnet32 PCI support
[ ] Use RX polling (NAPI)
<*> AMD 8111 (new PCI lance) support
[ ] Use RX polling (NAPI)

At least that works for me. I didn't build them as modules, but you could.

[ ] Use RX polling (NAPI)
<*> AMD 8111 (new PCI lance) support
[ ] Use RX polling (NAPI)

This doesn't build them as modules but you could if you want. This setup worked for me.
