Hello all,
Why Yahoo still has a bad messenger for Linux? There is no place to actually complain about that, and yahoo doesn't bother about Linux users either. Why does yahoo keeps a step brotherly attitude towards Linux.
Regards,
Cranium1200
pidgin is stable, but doesn't support webcams and doesn't work well with file sharing.
Kopete supports webcams and sometimes file sharing works, but kopete just isn't that stable. I haven't tried the new kopete that is for KDE 4 yet.
Upshot is that Yahoo IM support in Linux kind of sucks. I have been thinking of getting involved with that on the pidgin project but I am not sure I want to commit the time.

I can't help you with webcams, but on file transfers, Pidgin is great! I have transferred across Yahoo!, Google (XMPP), and MSN protocols with no problems whatsoever. The webcam is the only issue there.
I've installed Pidgin 2.4.0 on Vector 5.8 Std. Unable to log in. Disconnects with error ""****** disconnected. Could not establish a connection with server:
Access denied: HTTP proxy server doesn't forbids port 8080 tunneling"
Although all the proxy settings for our office network are correctly entered, still no result. Guys from VL forum pointed at post in Pidgin's support section http://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/496
Seems like there is some inconsistence with http on Pidgin.
Have you, guys, tried Pidgin on LAN network connecting to yahoo?
Well, well, well... Life is a fun with yahoo. Installed it (version 1.0.4) and today I got a system message "This version of messenger expired on April 2, 2008... Please upgrade" and it simply doesn't connect.
How can I upgrade if the version installed is already latest which can be downloaded from Yahoo's site?

I've never had any stability issues with kopete, and yahoo file transfers work for me on it more often than in pidgin. The big problem with kopete is it doesn't have privacy settings for the yahoo protocol. I now usually use pidgin for yahoo (and kopete for everything else) just to avoid being spammed.
As for yahoo's client, the worst thing is their deb package for it. Last I checked, it senselessly required a specific outdated version of a library such that it'd only force-install as a broken package. It's obvious no one at yahoo has even tried to install it for many years, let alone develop it.

They're never going to release an update. Their download page states "tested on RedHat 6.2, 7.2 and 8 and 9; Debian Woody"... which places it around 2003.
Perhaps they set it to "expire" as a way of hinting that they're through. Aside from how pathetic it is, I'd recommend removing it because the lack of updates can present a security risk.
yeah, seems like yahoo has abandoned their client for Unix-like systems. i was able to "break through" my proxy server only with their official client. Both Pidgin and GyachE failed.
And now that "official client" expired. LOL@yahoo. Wake up, you guys! It's "open source era" knocking on the doors.

Similar with yahoo, ... Look skype, their version of beta is so crap for linux. You are lucky it works, if not then you'll be of no luck due to hardware of no idea why...
Usually it is ingoing/outgoing mic that fails. I dont know what they changed 1.3 was working.
datopdog,
1) does gtalk work with yahoo protocol?
2) I couldn't find any package for linux on their site http://www.google.com/talk/ only the windows .exe
Point is why do you want to use a closed protocol, you should be encouraging your friends on yahoo to move to an xmpp system instead.
All the messaging applications that come with linux can use gtalk because of its open nature, there is no need for google to reinvent the wheel and create a linux client.
