I have a question. Maybe somebody already has experience with Yahoo Messenger and can help me. I want to install Yahoo Messenger and here are the instructions:
RedHat Linux
1. Save the appropriate file to your machine:
RedHat 6.x
RedHat 7.x
RedHat 8.0
RedHat 9
2. Log in as root and type: rpm -i <filename> with the appropriate filename depending on your version to install the application.
3. Run /usr/bin/ymessenger from X Window to launch the application.
The question I have is, in 3. above. What exactly does this mean? How would I run
it? Click on the file? Does "X Window" mean I am not in a GUI like Gnome?
Also, it says:
This client uses an un-GNOMEified version of GtkHTML 0.8, which is under the LGPL. Download the source.
What is an un-GNOMEified version and will it conflict with Gnome GUI?
Basically, I want to use Yahoo Messenger just like you would in Windows XP...just have it sit in the GUI and work in the GUI...So I am hoping it will just work with Gnome
Desktop or KDE desktop like any other GUI application.
Need some help here in understanding the instructions and what I have to do to get it to run. Thanking everyone in advance...JimmyCFiverTwo
If it's installed, just run it. If you are using Gnome, then it's usually in the menu Applications->Internet->Internet Messenger. Just enter your IM accounts for each service that you want to use, and you are up.
Distribution: Mac OS 10.7 / CentOS 6(servers) / xubuntu 13.04

If you can't find it in your list of applications just start up a terminal session and type "gaim" and the program will load. Gaim is a lot better than Yahoo Messenger for Linux and is my choice of an Instant Messaging program. Perhaps I am biased, but once I started using it on Linux I now prefer it even on Windows (though meebo.com is a nice solution on machines that don't belong to me).
Gaim, kopete if you use KDE or Gyach if your looking for voice chat capabilities, are your best choices. The Yahoo Messenger from Yahoo sucks and has very few features compared to native linux apps.
Gyach Enhanced is currently THE most feature-rich Yahoo! client for Linux operating systems. It is an unofficial fork of the original Gyach, and supports almost all of the features you would expect to find on the official Windows Yahoo! client: Voice chat, webcams, faders, 'nicknames', audibles, avatars, display images, and more. Yet, it remains very light-weight and memory-friendly. Gyach Enhanced, pY! Voice Chat, and the Gyach-E Webcam Utilities all use Gtk-2 for their user interfaces
