Xinerama with XFree86 4.3.0.1 & GNOME 2.6.1 on Debian

I'm trying to get my ATI Radeon 8500 vieo card to work in a dual-head configuration. (one video card with CRT & TMDS)

I've followed the xinerama howto and X itself seems to be in xinerama mode - that is, I can move the mouse between monitors and all.

The problems seems to be that GNOME just mirrors whats on the first monitor onto the second monitor.

I've googled but haven't been able to find any mention of how to tell GNOME to use xinerama or any other kind of dual head mode.

Any suggestions?
