on friday i bought an acer tft 17" additional to my 19"crt-monitor... I have a ATI Radeon 9700 Card with DVI-D and VGA output...
Since friday i try to get a "Big Desktop" working... Finally I had some different problems...
When I use the integrated XaFree Radeon-Driver, Xinerama works and my Desktop goes over 2 monitors... - but with one problem.
the tft monitor shows me a box "input not supported", but i see the Desktop (KDE) behind it. - It seems that the resolution is a bit bigger than 1280x1024pixels, approx. 1280x1050pixels or so.
I cant see the KDE-Bar, but on the second screen its visible.
Thats the problem no.1
When i use the original ATI Driver "fglrx" with Xinerama, the content of the tft looks fine. on the Second monitor i see an exact copy of the content (like the tft) - only the mouse cursor is only in one screen. so the problem here is that the second monitor displays the wrong content. - When i Try to hit a button on the second screen, nothing happens.
A Third method i tried is to use the Integrated function for "big desktop" in fglrx. When i use fglrxconfig to create the XFConfig-4-file and then start X, i get two black screens... and a 100%cpu load caused by Xfree. I cant kill the process, when i reboot over ssh or so, the machine wont reboot cause Xfree blocks this somehow. so i have to reset the machine hard.
Problems over problems. Someone knows help for ONE of these?
My Config:
debian 3.0 stable - XFree 4.3.0 - Kernel 2.4.22
fglrx 3.2.8
ATI Radeon 9700 graphic my XF86Config-4
I have a similar problem with my new 9800. I can get the clone mode and single monitor modes running without a problem using the fglrx driver, but anything else has problems.
The big screen gives me cloned desktops, the other multi-monitor settings don't give me anything but the console. Xinerama doesn't work either using both monitors attached to the 2 9800 outputs.
If I pop in my other ATI card, a Radeon 7500, I can hook up the 2nd monitor and get X appearing fine on both monitors using xinerama, but with one small problem: the mouse. If I just type startx, it boots into WindowMaker and the mouse does not display in the 9800 monitor except very infrequently after I left-click and then left-click again to close the menu. It appears normally in the 7500 monitor. If I use KDM or switch to runlevel 4 (I'm on Slackware, this is multi-user graphical, equivalent to RedHat's runlevel 5), the mouse works fine until I log into a user session, at which point it stops working on the 9800 monitor except when I roll over something that highlights, like a button or icon, it works for a few seconds. Then, when I log out of the session back to the login manager the screen goes grey and the computer stops responding to all input. I have had xinerama working with the 7500 and monitor plus a different card and monitor on another computer, so I know my XF86Config settings are correct for this card and monitor.
I solved my problem,
I use the XFree-Driver "radeon", the problem was that the TFT monitor said "input not supported". - But only when i connect the TFT with the DVI-Cable. I tried the VGA-Cable and it works.
with the fglrx-drivers, the TFT also works with the DVI-cable. its a bit strange...
but now, the "big desktop" works fine, when new fglrx-drivers are released i'll try to get them work again....
I was finally able to get my 9700 Pro to clone the displays on both monitors. I am using the most current ATI drivers. I am trying to get the 'big desktop' but cannot seem to get it working. I have tried the 'fglrxconfig' utility provided by the ATI drivers, but then it won't go into the X server. With the setup that I have posted here, I can actually move the mouse to either screen and it appears that the screen size is definitely twice as wide. The problem is that I still show the same content on both screens. If I change the server layout to 'leftof', programs open up on part of the screen that cannot be accessed since the monitors are cloning each other. If anyone has any suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated.

I has a big problem with starting X. I have tried the 'fglrxconfig' utility provided by the ATI drivers, but then it won't go into the X server. Which XFree-Driver "radeon" do you use?? could you post the lastest XF86COnfig-4 in your platform?
How did you set in .config?
I has sufferred the problem for 2 weeks...>"<~
Thank you very much...........
after 3 weeks of configuring and testing and frustration i decided to change the graphics card... A hard solution, but the drivers of ati are not yet good enough.
I bought a Matrox P650 with dual dvi-adapter. half an hour of configuring, and all works fine. - the card is not good as the ati card, but enough for me.
I will sell my card @ ebay.... for the windows users
