xawtv picture scattered

I am trying to get xawtv running, my tv card seems to be installed ok. But xawtv doesn't work right. If the capture mode is on grabdisplay, then I just get a blue screen. If the capture card is set to overlay, then the video (with audio) is scattered in small blocks across the screen, totally ignoring the bonderies of the window xawtv is running in. And then if the capture is off it display a nice still picture. I couldn't find anyting on this in my searching, tried it with my other tv card and found the same results. Installed tvtime but, although the scan finds the channels, all I can get is a blue screen, can't get a menu or anything. Makes me think maybe an X problem, but I don't know what. I can't seem to find any clues in logs or outputs. Any suggestions? Thank you.

OK, unmerging, and re-emerging my xorg-x11 fixed the problem. Now I have a new problem of three or four distinct, thin, vertical stripes on the picture. They are not exactly stripes, but areas that are 1 or 2 pixels wide, where the pixels are very slow to update. In other words, if the picture doesn't change much for a bit, it looks fine, but as soon as there is a change in the picture, I have these stripes that slowly dissapear over a preiod of about 5-6 seconds, with either card again. Any suggestions?

Also, in case it matters, the location, and sometimes the number of the lines changes if I drag the tv window around a little.
