Xandros Surfside 3.0 disconnects dialup at random

i have seen in other posts that it is better to have an external dialup modem, but being very remote and rural it will be a while before i can try that fix.

meanwhile downloads are impossible, so am using a friend's windows machine to put Linux Firefox update on a jump drive, unzipping to Xandros Desktop

my question: will the information contained in the thread "Useful thread information about installing programs" work for updates like this, or do i need to first uninstall the old Firefox?

in general, the Xandros is behaving badly in my dual partition with windows xp, freezes up a lot and its media programs don't seem to read many formats--could i have installed incorrectly? (only the 256 color installation option worked)

toddling ms refugee thanks you for your time.
