dialup disconnects randomly, suse9.1

i have 2 machines both using SUSE 9.1 and the same modem (external USB) one never disconnects (until 4 hrs) or i hang up the (866 PIII), the other (2.4G AMD)disconnectts all the tine
kinternet log reports 4x no echo from server, assumes serial disconnection and hangs up
where is the settings that will allow me to set it for a longer time without echo?
i have set timeout in yast to 0 seconds (never d/c), but it still disconnects at random after recieving 4 "no replies".
i vaguely remember doing it on my old machine - but u think i can remember where it was?

PS dont know if its related...but yahoo msgr on my AMD also causes d/c when i send/recieve chat msgs??

thx for any help
