X-Windows died... HELP please.

Hello,
My X-Windows on a Fedora core2 Compaq presario 900 died yesterday. It gives an error message of not being able to find some fixed font. I confirmed that for two different logins. Since the log is huge, please let me know what(from the log) or output of some diagnostics tools should I post to get help. Please also let me know quick fixes, if any. Since it is happening for two users, I think it is some X-Windows specific file that got deleted or corrupt. Would reinstalling from rpm's fix the problem? If so which?

Also, should I cross post to another group to get help quickly, if yes which?

Thank you,
regards,
Prasad

cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep EE

This should spit out all of the errors in your X log

The grep EE /var/log/Xorg.0.log output is as follows:

(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.
(II) Loading extension MIT-SCREEN-SAVER
(EE) Couldn't load XKB keymap, falling back to pre-XKB keymap

thank you,
Prasad

I don't think those errors would stop X from starting. If you don't already, boot into runlevel 3 and try to start your window manager manually: startkde or gnome-session or whatever. If it doesn't start it should give you more messages that might point you closer to the problem. Right now, based on your description and my own experience, I'll bet your users have a ~/.xinitrc file with nothing in it. It should contain the window manager's startup command: startkde, gnome-session or whatever.

Thank you Dracolich and Gort32.

Well, I always boot at runlevel 3 and then do a 'startx &'. I have tried 'startx &' for two users and root as well. I still can't startx for any.

Is there anything else I should grep and post out here.

Please help.

Thank you,
-Prasad

Hello,
well, I found over the weekend what the problem was - I was out of disk space. I had copied some files which were using up nearly 60% of the disk leaving just a little space for linux to start, I guess because there were other applications/daemons failing too. I was going to delete the files but didn't so... it caused X to just start and close after a while.
