sound just died

i was just running as normal with sound working. then i installed some new cursor icons so i decided that i need to log out of all my programs would be updated. when i logged bk in it gave me this error in a prompt.

Quote:
Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device: default can't be opened for playback (Device or resource busy)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.
now before that i used crossover office to install realplayer and ms office. any help would be good cuz I'm lost. and please make it simple and give details. oh yeah if anyones figured out how to make mandy compile things i would like to know.(that said urpmi more than makes up for it most of the time when compare to other distros auto install tools in my opinion)

i forgot some improtant info so i decided to add some much need information. I'm running mandy 10.1c and the sound worked fine before. my sound card is on board. i also hv some more information about the situation. when i restarted the computer( wow i dont think ive done that since i installed it 3 weeks ago) i could here the kde start up sound when i logged in. but when i tryied to play an mp3 through amaroK, which worked before, it failed to produce any sounds. i logout and login to root but there to sound was disabled please help me.

The prior login left a sound server running which has ownership of /dev/dsp

There are serveral things you can do.

1) Kill of the errant process before logging in again.

2) Not run the sound server (why do you need it anyway? Instead configure KDE to use /bin/play to play back wave files.)

3) You may be able to change the permissions on /dev/dsp to make it world writeable.

This may permit multiple interations of the sound server (all which will be eating up RAM) to run.

e.g.

chmod 777 /dev/dsp
