OK, the XF86Config file is going into /etc/X11/ directory,
have you tried XConfigurator to configure your screen, video device, pointing device and keyboard? If no, run it to configure those. If you want kde to start when you startx, put .xinitrc file in your home directory, put the following line into this file
exec startkde
And see what happens.
