Is 30% mem usage is a problem(provided u have a suitable swap partition)??
try 'plaympeg' .if that doesnt work, list whatever it tells.

The linux kernel uses ram, it doesnt let it just sit there wasting money. It caches stuff, but will release that if there's a large demend for ram and it has preloaded some unused code.

I believe the memory usage for X, as reported by top and most other utilities, includes the memory on your video card.

33% of 256 = 84.48. I'm assuming your video card has 64 MB of RAM on it. That leaves 20.48 MB, which would be reasonable memory usage for X.

some times with the free command i see 10 mb of free ram i also have 256 mb of ram but when you ran a program then close it kernel does not delete all of its garbage from ram then when you run the program againg it executes faster but that doesnt mean that when you open and close 100 diffrent app you will be out of ram when theres a demand on ram to the kernel kernel gives enough ram to the applications

run "free -m" in terminal
look at the second line named: -/+ buffers/cache
and then look at the number in the free column...thats how much ram you have unused...
if i look at my totals i see 628total, 494used, 133free , but in reality its not all really being used as it is being cached, so the line that i pointed out to you shows that there is actually 486 megs free..and only 141 being used.
