who says it can't?? it can, but the (free) kernel support for this is very experimental... i imagine the main reason for this is that microsoft keeps a tight lid on the ntfs code and specs, but i'm not sure...

are options... for example, there's a project called
captive which uses windows files (ntfs.sys, etc.) and other stuff to achieve awesome read/write ntfs compatibility:
