yesterday I compiled 2.6.3 kernel, everything was fine except that when I tries to start X it gives me error and aborted. error: "unable to open /dev/agpgart no such device
AGP Gart support is not avaible make sure you kernel has agpgart support or that the agpgart kernel moduel is loaded.
Screen found but with no usable configuration"
Then when I manullay "insmod intel-810" my X get started. however this was not the case on my 2.4.22 kernel (Fedora Core 1).
In X I had faced with another problem my sound drivers not loaded ac_97 and also my conexant modem not installed and these stuff worked well under 2.4.22.
Anyone with any suggestion please becuase I want to use this new enhanced kernel.
The 2.6 kernels have a new system for loading modules. Have you installed module-init-tools? The 2.6 kernel doesn't use /etc/modules.conf to list what modules need loading, it uses a file called /etc/modprobe.conf. When you install module-init-tools you can use a script called generate-modprobe.conf in the module-init-tools source folder to make a modprobe.conf file for you.
Try redoing your configuration, and this time answering Yes to the drivers you need :P
You'll probably need a new conexant driver. If you're using linuxant's driver, i think you can compile it again to use 2.6.3, but you may need to upgrade. Their site doesn't mention 2.6 at all, which isn't really a good sign.
Andrew Benton: well I really do not know about modules-init too, this time I will give a try with this tools. However can you please tell me when should I run generate-modprobe.conf?
after all the compilation of ther kerenl i mean after make bzImage, make modules, make modules_install, make install.
I'm not really much of an expert on the modutils/module-init-tools thing. Most of what I know I learned on this page http://linuxfromscratch.org/pipermai...er/002290.html which was written for people who build Linux From Scratch so some of the details may be different on Fedora Core. It's possible you already have the new tools installed and just need to add a few entries to modprobe.conf like you would have with modules.conf for a 2.4 kernel. Look in /etc. If there's already a modprobe.conf you probably already have module-init-tools. These are small programs to load modules into the kernel. You don't need to reinstall the kernel.
Thank you again, I do not know whether module-init-tools already installed or not. However I download it and install it according to README instruction.
My 2.6.3 kernel still not loading proper modules for example X server modules.
I do all this without recompiling the kerenel. Is it necessary to recomiple the kernel?
what should I do regarding "Making mrproper in the source tree", perhaps I had 2.6.3 kernel I ready installed.
lastly is I want to compile the kerenl again what about the old entries of 2.6.3 in /boot and grub.conf may I delete it or the new compilation will override it?
