Which filesystem to use?

This is the second time it has happened. I install gentoo and use it for a few days. Then for some reason my computer locks up and I have to push the reset button. When it reboots it has to do a filesystem check. It automatically tries to fix it but there are too many problems so it says to run fsck manually. I do that and then I reboot. It loads up fine but I can't get into kde because some of its files are corrupted/missing and also X11's files are corrupted/missing.

From this I have to say that ext3 is not a good filesystem even with its journalizing feature. Now I have to reinstall most of the programs in my system agian, but I don't want to have to do this everytime my computer locks up. I don't really care if the computer locks up; as long as I can get back in I will be fine because I keep my important files on another partition.

So what do you guys think is a better filesystem? ReiserFS, XFS, or ext2? Should I give ReiserFS a try or just go back to ext2?

Thanks

ext2 is crap.

How old is the hard drive? I've had this problem before and a similar problem using scandisk back when I was using Windows 98. The problem was that my Hard Drive was busted. You might look into it. The fact that fsck keeps correcting so many proeblems continually is a symptom of a bad hard drive. It might be something you'll want to check out.

Also if your hard drive is old enough, journaling filesystems don't seem to work. I have to use ext2 on my Vector lappy because the system crashes on boot-up with ext3 or reiserfs.

I'm with Zuggy, I use ext3 and it's fantastic. I've almost forgotten what a corrupt file is I haven't seen one since I started using it. Check that your drives isn't getting ready to shit it's pants, maybe backup any important data.

Another vote for the hard drive being FUBAR - I use ext3 with Gentoo, zero problems.

Just my 2 cents but I'd go with Reiser -- J.W.

I've been using reiser on the server that hosts my website/media center. I need to switch, seems like every week I have to shut it down and do a reiserfsck --rebuild tree. I think I'm going to go back to ext3 which I had zero problems with.
