which brands of external modems works with linux?

All of them that I know of.

Unless they are USB or some other type of non serial connection.

Question
Mandrake and RH support USB mice and keyboards. Just out of curiosity....why can't those distros support USB modems?

Distro's with the newer kernel do support USB modems as far as I know (maybe not many!) but if you're a beginer an external serial job is gonna be much easier to setup, hence its better to steer Doris away from the USB option...
