name of external 54k modem that works in linux
Hi,
Does anyone know the brand/model of an external 54k modem that will work in linux with minimal effort (preferably that will just plug in and work out of the box without fathing downloading and compiling drivers from the web and then working out why they dont quite work on linux...)?
The reason I want this is to setup an old computer of mine for my parents to use and they dont want to spend lots of money on windows xp/office. I was thinking of going for suse linux (personally I use scientific linux but obviously this isnt most appropiate for them probably) since I have heard good things about ease of use. Any opinions on which distro is best for this (the idea is once I set it up they need to be able to do everything with point and click using the mouse - no usage of terminals!)? They only want to write letters/do email and surf the web.
Already tried google and didnt get relevant hits ("modem 54k works linux")
Thanks,
Mark

Any serial modem that connects via the serial port should work with linux without any drivers. BTW it is 56K not 54K. Also serial, rs-232 and external are other good search terms.
Like this Zoom Model 3049

Hi,
I bouught an external modem and plugged it into /dev/ttys1. It does not work - I cannot communicate with it. I tried the test:
echo atdt3333 > /dev/ttys1
and get "Input/output error"
I configured it in yast2 and it flashed a bunch of lights as if it was being communicated with.
If I use kinternet and press dial in nothing happens at all. Not even an error message.
Any ideas on where I am going wrong?
Thanks,
Mark

maybe it's not connected to ttyS0
check /dev/modem, or /dev/ttyS1 - just realised: it's tty+CAPITAL S

/dev/modem points at /dev/ttyS1. So if I fix the s to S then I can comunicate with the modem (well it makes a lot of noise when I do the echo thing).
Still kinternet does not want to connect though. Pressing "Dial-in" rersults in nothing happening. Does Suse linux have any other internet connect programs by default (I cant find anything on the menus in KDE)? Mayube it is kinternet that does not work and the modem is fine.
Thanks,
Mark

ok, I rebooted the computer and now it works (according to a website I found on google you have to reboot linux after installing a new modem - I had thought this was never neccessary in linux...)
Thanks for all the help,
Mark

there must be another way of doing it (shutting down a service and restarting it, but I'm not sure which one, so it can be done without rebooting ... somehow.
Personally I use KPPP for my internet connections
