where and how to call xscreensaver?

Running Red Hat 7.3 / XFree86 / Enlightenment -- booting to runlevel 5.

where should xscreensaver be called from? I'd like to be able to use xscreensaver-command lock to lock my session, but can't figure out how to call xscreensaver to run on my display. I've tried putting it in /etc/X11/xinit/Xclients, /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc, and /etc/rc.local as 'xscreensaver &' but no go. I think it has to do with it being launched as root.

Any hints?

are you using creating a session via GDM or XDM? ( see /etc/X11/prefdm ) and the gdm configuration files.

if you're using XDM write it in your ~/.xsession and that will be executed. One way to make sure that you enter pretty much the same environment thru xdm/compatible (runlevel 5) and xinit(runlevel 3) is to make .xsession a symbolic link pointing to .xinitrc

If you're using the redhat default, you'll need to fiddle with your gdm conf files, i think.

RH stock, unfortunately. To defend myself, I've never used X much (mostly servers with shell is all). I imagine then that I'm using gdm. I see the following related processes running through ps:

Code:
root 814 0.0 1.3 6144 1668 ? S 08:48 0:00 /usr/bin/gdm -nodaemon
root 822 0.0 1.7 6688 2248 ? S 08:48 0:00 /usr/bin/gdm -nodaemon
root 823 0.5 14.2 85536 17892 ? S 08:48 1:10 /usr/bin/X11/X :0 -auth /var/gdm/:0.Xauth
I'm at a bit of a loss of how to proceed right now . . .

Found out.

It goes it the .Xclients-default file; called immediately before the listed window manager in this file.

D'oh.

Oh, good. Just make sure that every Xclient that you need (xterm, netscape etc) everytime you start x arefollowed by an & to start in the background. And the window manager should be the last thing to be started, cuz as soon as the last process terminates, your session will be reset. I prefer to keep my startup stuff in .xinitrc. It follows.

#wmxmms --title --single &
xscreensaver -no-splash &
aterm -geometry 80x24+100+50&
aterm -geometry 80x24+600+50&
gkrellm -w &
#root-tail -g 250x25+100+50 /var/log/httpd/access_log,CornFlowerBlue &
exec ~/.Xclients
