hi: this is my first post although I visit several times my question concerns what wine lets a user do? does it let you run software that is written for windows so you can run nonsupported peripherals or can you only use ms programs like paint or wordpad? thanks

The list of unsupported peripherals in linux has grown pretty short I haven't heard of using wine in that way. It's mostly used for running windows programs like you said. If you want more game support look at wineX.
thanks for the reply, I have a polaroid 320 camera (serial port) gtkam lists this camera as a usb interface I need a way to have it recognised,I also have a acer620ut scanner and have read about the problem with acer scanners any ideas or help will be appreciated.
Hiya. well, it is true. wine, is a Windows Emulator. What you usually run in Windows, like Microsoft office, I.E., and perharps your Hearts game...you can also run them under Linux using this emulator. And, for some people like me, you can also put more emphasis in the gaming area, where you may also be able to run Windows only supported Games, like Starcraft.
Anyway...for what you want to do...you do not need Wine.
you are running redhat 8.0...which is the most automated piece of software Redhat has come up with yet. So...what don't you go aheaad and try the next step to 'Mount' your digital camera.
1. Make a new folder in the /mnt folder.
mkdir /mnt/camera
2. Turf off your computer
3. Connect your USB camera cable to your camera and your computer.
4.start up your computer...let it run through boot up.
5.Pay close attention to the Kernel messages, and see where the USB support of Storage devices is loaded, and check to what device the camera is mounted to.... /dev/scX I believe will be the name of the device...where X is a number.
6. After you log in..and everything...simply do the following, as root.
mount /dev/scx /mnt/camera
Then, your camera should be mounted..and you can download or upload all the pictures, or video, or data, you may have or want to have in your camera. It's quite simple. Have fun,
as the name says "Wine Is Not an Emulator" and it's not, it's a compatability layer, a collection of libraries that enable "alien" win32 code to run on linux. This is not what an emulator (e.g. zsnes) does
It's alot better than it used to be though, I can actually run useful windows apps now. WinMX, TMPG, Virtual Dub.....wineX has become pretty impressive also. I use it all the time to play CS, Warcraft 3, and Black & White. True most of them didn't work right away and took a little tweaking, but better than not having them at all.
Have any of you tried Dreamweaver with Wine? It seems to be the only real piece of software I'm missing with the transition from winbloze. <and that is really amazing>
I miss that gui. Can wine run that? Last time I tried it, it was highly unstable.
