Weird cd command errors

I was getting this error when I switched to a directory and included the trailing forward slash.

chdir: could not get current directory: getcwd: cannot access parent directories: No such file or directory

but not when I didn't include the trailing slash.

Example:

cd /usr/src/
cd /usr/src

the second command had no errors. I still can change directories but the error annoys me. I'm running slack 8.1 with the bash shell.
