Valid characters for filenames

I did some search on Google, trying to find out any limitation on the filename constitution, but little did it return.

I'm talking about ext3/4. Are there any official references about the ranges of ASCII characters can be used in these file systems?

everything but forward slashes, I believe? It is certainly not limited to the 128 ASCII characters.

What's allowed and what's a good idea are not always the same thing! The best rules, to ensure that names are always handled correctly by software, are

1. use letters and numbers where-ever you like
2. use the hyphen, underscore, or period only inside a name, not at the beginning
3. don't use anything else
