Question Upgrading KDE

This is probably a really dumb question....
Can I upgrade KDE while being in KDE or should I switch desktop environments before upgrading?

I have a feeling you have to work from a console (runlevel 3) instead of X.

you can upgrade KDE whilst using KDE, but it can have disastrous consequences, you are better of upgrading whilst using another window manager or at the console as suggested above.
