Unhappy Unable to log in

Hello,

I have problems regarding login in my linux 7.3 box I first notice the problem when I wasn't able to login in my telnet session. It only shows the ff:
------------------------------------------------------
Red Hat Linux release 7.3 (Valhalla)
Kernel 2.4.18-3 on an i686

------------------------------------------------------

And when I tried it locally, I can only enter the username and will not proceed for the password.

I tried to reboot it and the system logger failed to start.

Is the system logger responsible for this problem. How can i resolved this?

Thanks in advance.

Reboot, and when you get to the boot screen, type Ctrl X

You will get the option to choose which boot level you want.
Type single or init 1

This will log you in as root and you can have a look around.
Do lastlog and see who has been logging in.
Do chkconfig --list | more and make sure services are set to turn on properly.

From that console you can do init 3 or init 5 to boot up fully.

Have you set up sshd to run, rather than using telnetd?

hi peter,

i have logged in using ssh, and found out the the /bin/login has been corrupted. I looked for the /bin/login from other rh linux boxes and it was owned by the root. But in this case it was owned by the another user. I had trouble reinstalling the util-linux rpm because of this. But after reinstalling the util-linux, the login problem has been solved.

Now I am puzzled how the /bin/login's ownership and attribute was changed? My system logger failed to start hence i have no logs to analyze But now I already fixed the syslog problem. So how would i know how, when and who changed the /bin/login's properties?

I disabled the telnet service and now use the ssh.

thanks for the reply!

Tripwire is a programme that monitors file changes.
You can set which files are monitored/ignored and it has several choices for recording/notifying.

It is in the standard distribution cd/download
