Ubuntu user wants to try Gentoo...

...And dual boot with an already installed Winxp partition. I got the minimal cd from gentoo.org and booted it but got stuck after allowing US keyboard layout haha :P

Saw this error:
Code:
The root block device is unspecified or not detected.
Please specify a device to boot, or "shell" for a shell...
Don't understand what that means or how to fix it, there's no mention of that in the handbook. Google not my friend either other than to say try installing from within another distro. IS that a better way to go?

This is for an Acer Aspire 3680, wired net connection.

I'm not sure but you could try getting the systemrescuecd and booting with that. http://www.sysresccd.org/

This was the only way I could get far enough ahead to install gentoo on mya last build with AHCI Intel ICH9 and JMicron (G)SATA drives on a Gigabyte ga-p35-ds3 mobo... so:

If it is something to do with your mobo and drive/hardware configuration maybe that would work - it has a very recent kernel and auto detection built in (and its based on gentoo so it makes a good live cd for an install rather than another foreign distro.
