debian unstable (not stable as the packages installed are really old, and unstable is really stable).
you can install it with a floppy. install the stable woody system using a floppy, and when ur done, apt-get upto unstable, and *poof* ur on a kick-ass system.
The unstable is not that stable. Even testing is sometimes unstable or does not work. I had to downgrade some software to stable a few times. Debian/stable is very stable though but old software...
That's why I am considering Gentoo and FreeBSD, I am hoping more recent software but a stable system.

hmm, never had any problems myself. what programs are you saying causes it?
Originally posted by Trinity22 ah much thanks, all. I did pull off disc 1 via ibiblio (the only one that would go through) and hunted for mirror for disc 2, found one in UofC but was pulling 20kb a second (I have cable 'net), but thanks to the link from timdsmith I'm pulling 70kb, which will make my early morning run to Wal-Mart for CD's much earlier :P

Try ftp://ftp.kpn.be which is always fairly fast if your still looking for a good server to download packages and the iso's from.

Once with Gnumeric, I didn't have any math functions, not even avg. So I downgrade and it was ok.
More recently with libao. It got upgraded to testing but the testing version does not work on powerpc. There is a bug report that is 81 days old, so I just downgrade to stable. Good thing is that it is easy to downgrade and kind of cool.
