you clearly suck at using windows, i dont know how you survive in linux. i sincerely dont mean to be offensive, but i'm in total and utter shock. this is a clear example of a stubborn and biased linux user. the simplicity and finality at which you could "tweak" the xp computer must have elluded you because you're so used to spending hours reading how-to's, spending weeks getting something relatively simple to work in linux, and tolerate unacceptable things, like no sound?? (these are just examples!)
this takes 2 hrs ok?
- partition, quick format ntfs, install xp
- enable xp's built-in firewall
- windows update, service pack first, then other security updates. not all at once, or it'll just stop responding because some updates overlap (like security roll-up package)
- download free antivirus software with auto-updates: AVG
- download free configurable firewall software: zone alarm basic, then disable xp's built-in firewall.
- download latest drivers for video and sound.
- printer drivers that came with the computer dont work? big surprise. nothing outdated works well. go to HP site and download the latest drivers.
- lastly, tell them not to say "YES" to every screen that pops up asking to install GAIN or other adware/spyware. dont visit porn or warez sites, and you won't ever see porn ads, except in email - but everyone gets this without spam control.
there you go. try doing that in linux! hahahaa! no need to spend weeks on the drivers (if they even exist) and then pretending to be happy with linux even though your sound card won't work, your graphics card can't accelerate anything, and you're stuck with second-rate featureless copies of their win32 prototype.
this takes 2 hrs ok?
- partition, quick format ntfs, install SuSE
- enable SuSe's built-in firewall
- SuSE update with YAST2. Just let it happen, it wont stop responding.
- Dont need antivirus software ( yet )
- No need to download another firewall
- Latest drivers for video automatically downloaded with YAST2
- Latest Cups drivers automatically downloaded with YAST2
- lastly, havn't found any adware/spyware that works with Linux yet, so not a problem.
there you go. try doing that in XP! hahahaa! no need to spend weeks on the drivers if you have bought compatible hardware, and then pretending to be happy with XP even though you're stuck with Microsofts inbuilt spyware, lack of control over the system, the knowledge that you are being overcharged for the privilige of funding Microsofts unethical business practices and are stuck in an upgrade cycle just to retain compatibility with the unnessasary changes to Microsofts file formats.
I could make a nice truckload of assumptions, but i might as well just ask
1 - You dumped the USB cable and switched over to Ethernet, and Router/Ethernet/NIC works fine with Windows right?
Assuming your router internal IP is 192.168.0.1 and you configured Mandrake to use 192.168.0.xxx (with xxx!=1), and to use 192.168.0.1 as gateway, if you ping 192.168.0.1, does it reply? (assuming your router responds to pings from internal LAN, some i know just dont )
Until you can get a connection working from your PC to the router, anything else is no go.
If the above works, get the IP of servers who respond to ping (google, yahoo, anything), note the IP adresses and go back to Linux. If you can ping ipadressofbigsite but cant ping www.bigsite.something , your Internet connection is working, but your DNS resolution is not. If thats the case, then you just have to find out how to configure it (sorry, thats one of the things i still dont know how to do by hand, blame Slack's netconfig for it ) If neither works, then i have no more ideas (at least right now).
p.s. You wouldnt have happened to have put some sort of DENY ALL rules into netfilter would you??? A few bad rules into the firewall and you internet connection disapears, sometimes along with you LAN connection :P

Yes indeedy it does

No it doesn't, so I guess I stop here It just says "Network unreachable". On the diagnostics screen it shows while loading Linux it says that it interfaced with eth0 OK (which is what my ethernet card is), so can I assume from that that I've picked the right driver for it? The only error it comes up with while booting is it says failed next to something like 'Starting ACPI'. Could you tell me what this means possibly? And might this have anything to do with my problem? Just a long shot!

Thanks very much for your time it is much appreciated!
Don't give up. If you stick with it and are willing to do some studying, in short time you will reap the HUGE benefits that linux has to offer over other unmentionable operating systems.
Sammy, could you do an ipconfig /all im windows and post the result? It might shed some light my way...
And nevermid the troll ^^^^^ they're bound to show up every now and then..... Too bad i wasted 2s of my life reading his pseudo-enlightened one liner....
edit: btw, ACPi=Advanced Configuration & Power Interface. Wates of time and effort like APM if you ask me, but someone is bound to have a different opinion If ppl do care about power consumption, maybe they shouldn't trade their P233MMX for P4-3200.............. Me? I bought myself VIA ITX mobos and shut off both APM and ACPI :P AMD is investing in Geode arch, so maybe the idea isnt so dumb after all.... When the Cyrix guys talked about "enough power" (if i remeber right) maybe they were not so "whacky" after all....
