The dotnet framework

Hi Linuxians,

I am basically a PHP guy with several years of travel in it. I am highly satisfied with my work and job and the way I break my senses with PHP.

My problem at this juncture is that people of the Windows environment gain in the race with me as they have the Dotnet framework which has complete GUI interface which enables them to complete their task several times faster than me.

When I observe this linuxquestions website I am perplexed that I too can solely develop such a website but time is a very big constraint.

If any such framework like Dotnet is released in Linux platform (with php, perl, etc), it would indeed be a blessing in disguise for PHP developers like me.

If there is any complete framework like dotnet already available in Linux do guide me. If, on the contrary, not available, consider seriously my recommendations.

Regards,

tvks

.net isent that a programing language? I heard mono is a project to make .net apps work on Linux.

In any case, if its a programing language you want, and probably one thats interpreted, then maybe python is worth a looky? It has bindings to GUI toolkits like GTK and wxwindow, if thats what you meant.

SciYro, nope .net isn't a language it is a framework, and has been ported to work with C, Java as well as Visual Basic and ASP [ VBScript ]
Mono has limited support for current MS VB and VBS versions.

tkvs, there isn't an open source framework that is compatable with .net, but there are open source frameworks for web development that are comparable, and newer releases of most distros include them as options. [ Ruby On Rails and AJAX ]
There is also some open source projects that are adding .net support to open source tools. look for development packages in your distro repositories with "sharp" in the package name, they add the .net framework support.

I would check the dev pages of the php site [ http://php.net ] to see what the status is of any comparable framwork project. Not to forget, the Zend studio and tool set that are meant to improve php productivity.

Yes, mono is a project led by Suse/Novell to bring .NET functionality to Linux; in fact, Linux already contains a certain number of apps that were written using .NET.

Depending on the sort of distribution you are using, it may be really easy to get mono and the Monodevelop IDE. It comes standard with (open)Suse (of course), it's easy to install on Fedora and it's also available for Debian (although the MonoDevelop IDE is still in unstable at this time; I've installed it, though).
