Question SUSE personal 9.1

O.K.!! I have tons of questions !!

1) What is the diff' between a thread and a post ?
2) How do I post ?
3) Why am I getting a message at the top of the page that say's something like; " Our records show that u haven't posted to our site, why not do it now with your first question ? Having trouble ? see the FAQ's".
I purchased SUSE personal 9.1 at COMPUSA and installed it on to a HDD that already has MSWXPPRO,
good to this point, now I need to adjust the screen res'
and install my wireless adaptor. It says that I have to
log-in as a ROOT, 'cept it does'nt accept my password.
4) How do I reset my ROOT password ?
5) How do I Install my wireless adaptor ?
I have an ATHEROS AIRLINK dongle, model # [COLOR="Red"]AWLL4030.
I've also baught a used laptop from a garage sale and it is password locked at the very start before it even gets to the SPLASH SCREEN, and the HDD is also passeword locked, it's a DELL CPX 500mhz P3. I've tryed disconnecting the battery located under the bezel and reconnecting it 'cept that did'nt fix it. I called a local computer shop and said that they do password resets for $25, which means that it is likely easy to do.
That would be a bargain 'cept I want the experience. I would like very much to get this LINUX UP-N-RUNNING and get comfy with it so that I can SHOW-IT-OFF to friends and familly and then try other DIST's. I can't wait to feel FREE and to someday help other people with thier's.
Meanwhile, I'm a beginer and have much to learn.

THANK'S AND HAPPY HOLLIDAY'S ----- PG

Well your first three questions could have been answered by going to the FAQs (recommended).

A thread is what you started, my reply is a post. As for how to post, please see the FAQs.

You can adjust your screen resolution by right clicking on the desktop and adjusting the display properties in the dialogue box that pops up.

The root password thing could be a major stumbling block. You normally have to be root in order to reset the root password and you won't be able to install your wireless adaptor 'till you get that sorted. Try a search of LQ or google for an answer. Good luck!

What ???

If your advise isn't substantive, ( details, A to Z ), then it has little value, 'cept thanks for trying.

Your password is a BIOS password. These are very hard to get past - many companies use them so that if the laptop is stolen it is totally useless.... who is the past owner of your one? They could supply the info for free.

Members posting comments like this will find that they are offered very little help from forum members. Why should we help people whose initial posts are quite insulting. Perhaps you are unaware what a community is or what it does??

The number and depth of your questions could have taken me some time to research and answer. My advice to search LQ etc was correct. If you can't be bothered to read or research on your own behalf, tell me why I or anyone else should!

No it wasn't your second thread! It was your second post to your original thread and it would have been better done as an edit to that thread.

You really need to read the FAQs on how to post before you open another thread on LQ!

Thanks for sticking with me, I now see that I need to explain myself better, 'cept B4 I do let me ask this first question;
1) HOW ( not where ) do I use the quote feature on this post ?
( I haven't tryed it yet ) NOW, ABOUT ME;
I've owned a computer and have had 'net service for some 6 months now, so.... I'm not a Geek or a Tech, I'm an... IDIOT!!. So... when I ask HOW to do something, I mean litterally. For example;
If I ask " how to open the door " and someone says " turn the knob", I need details like " pinch the door knob between my finger and thumb, twist my wrist to cause the door knob to rotate until the dead bolt disenguages the strike, then pull the knob to cause the door to swing towards me " At this moment, my 2 biggest problems are. A) I recently baught SUSE personal 9.1 at a galiath computer chain, (~$50), installed it, and now I need help with it as I stated. Problem B) Because this site is very new to me I haven't fig'rd out how to wiggle through yet. So, this site is as clear to me as the BLU-SCREEN-A-DEATH. I'm not clear on which of the 2 is the bigger problem . In time, I will become Famillure with this site, until then, I am more interested in getting my o.s.
fired-up. B4 I started this thread, I tryed useing the features on this site. When I felt that I made a resonable effert, then I started this thread. So when I logged-on today and seen your post, I tryed it again b4 submitting this post. This is what I found; I didn't find a place at the FAQ where I could ask a question, instead I found a search field to set words in to do a word search. It went like this; I set the words, " thread post " in the search field, set the opt'ns, clikt search and it fetched 13 billboards? bodys? windows? ( whatever you want to call them ) of other explanations containing my search words. None of them directly asked either of my Q's " What is a thread " or " What is a post " You answered them directly 'cept the FAQ didn't. I had to connect the dots and fig'r it out by reading the 13 billboards.
2) Is that the way it is ?
3) HOW ( not where ) do you use the FAQ ?
( 2 @ 3 are the same question )
Its now time to make a couple of clarifications;
Z) I've reviewed my initial thread and I fail to see where I;ve asked for someone to lift a finger or DO the leg-work or DO anything. My questions are generally directed to anyone, particularly to those who may already know the answer and are gracious to assist and not neccasarilly to those who don't know the answer, ( see LQ RULES #3 ).
Y ) My questions are generally of " HOW " to do something and not of " where " to do something.
X) Before I started this thread, I started a thread on Nov. 12th at 8:06 PM titled " Any alternatives to Mcrsft O.S. ? ", So this is my 2nd thread.
If I haven't completely pstuoff by now and your still here,.. good ! Then consider a few other things; Since I'm spending time doing this instead of working on getting my DISTx ( I dont like distro )Fired-up, I've devised a PLAN B;
4) Consider installing your favorite dist' onto a laptop HDD, get it fired-up,so that I can get on-line, check my E-mails, and surf, and play my YAHOO LAUNCHcast and SHOW-IT-OFF then sell it to me.
5) Find my other thread and view it.
6) Is it common practice to install a faster processor on a laptop?
7) I'm on the hunt for a supplier for inexpensive, good 10g to 20g laptop HDD's
8) I'm on the hunt for laptop HDD caddy's, tray's
