Smile Support needed for Red Hat 7.2 novice!

Hi I've just been introduced to Linux system as part of a degree course. I've got a cd with Red Hat 7.2 which I have installed onto a pc at home. I can enter my log on name, but when prompted for my password it wont let me type one. Any ideas, I must admit I'm a complete novice at this so go slowly.

Kind regards
Karen

sounds like you may have entered your password incorrectly when you installed it. try logging in as root.

By design passwords are not echoed to the console as any * for security. Just type the password in the blind and then press the enter key. Was the CD part of your class materials? Redhat 7.2 is a very old distribution and will lack support for the latest hardware.

And welcome to LinuxQuestions.

Red Hat 7.2 is very very old and may not run on your newer hardware. I would suggest using a more up to date distro like Fedora or Centos - not only are they more likely to work, but you'll also have the advantage of using current commands and software.
