SSH Question
Once again I'm in need of the help from the good people at LQ!
The problem I have is that I can access a certain Linux RHEL box from a client PuTTy (in this case Win, but the effect is the same on a *Nix box), for example's sake being IP 4.4.4.4 trying to connect to 1.1.1.1.
When I try to access the same box (1.1.1.1) from another machine, let's make it 3.3.3.3, I'm prompted for a password, whereafter I'm just refused access...
I'm convinced the problem is that the sshd settings on the Linux box need adjusting. I've checked the sshd_config file but it's all greek to me. I've also checked the man pages and combed the net, but no help found...
How can I configure 1.1.1.1 to accept ssh connections from 3.3.3.3 too?
It may not be the ssh config file that is the issue. It is possible that the owner of 1.1.1.1 (by the way, is it you?) has locked down SSH access to specific IP addresses using either the iptables firewall or hosts.allow/hosts.deny. Until we know more about how 1.1.1.1 is secured, its going to be tough to give you better advice.
While ssh might be locked down some on machine 1.1.1.1, it isn't going to be IPtables, Firewalls, or TCPWrappers (hosts.allow/hosts.deny). If one of those where the issue, then he never would have gotten the prompt for a password, as they would have stopped the packet request before it had gotten to sshd when coming in from 3.3.3.3.
I do think that a little more information would be handy. Exactly what was the message received when you were denied access? Are you trying to access the machine at a time you normally wouldn't from 4.4.4.4 (the sysadmin might have log-ins restricted to certain times of the day)? And are you sure you didn't mis-type the password (sometimes it is the obvious)?

Thanks for the replies so far.
When I get this problem, I'm using remote access from 4.4.4.4 to 3.3.3.3, 4.4.4.4 being able to connect no problem and 3.3.3.3 not being able to 5 seconds later...
From 3.3.3.3, it's as if the password isn't recognized. It just says Access Denied right after entering the password, then it just re-asks for the password. Really frustrating!
use ssh -v name@... That will give you the verbose readout at the sending machine. If you have trouble reading the output, post it and I'm sure we can pinpoint the problem.
