speakers mess up after couple hours of machine use

i have a problem. when i changed from xp to linux mint 8, my speakers seem to just give up on me after about 2 hours of use. the only way i can fix them is to restart the computer. is there anyway i can keep this from happening?

Is your default volume set too loud? I don't know exactly what you mean.My kids (2) both have Mint on their netbooks and run them for hours at a time with no problems.Mayebe you have to adjust the levels in alsamixer.
