if you place a kernel at the beginning of a floppy it will boot without a loader.

I would not do it on a disk but I guess it should boot from the mbr

Check out http://www.bootsplash.org/

I am using it in slackware 9.0 and it works great.

No, you need something on the mbr. That's where the bootloader goes. If you use a bootloader then no problem, put the kernel anywhere.

If your replacing the bootloader with a kernel then it will need to be in the mbr of the boot disk.

This is not a very smart thing to do. It's only useful where you have a floppy and need space.

Use a bootloader.

I don't read this as doing what OP was looking for---but it does look useful...

Note that you can only boot <= 2.4 directly, for 2.6 you *must* use a bootloader.
